This event followed a visit paid by Macron to Algeria in February 2017, while he was still a presidential candidate, during which he described colonialism as "a crime against humanity”. These events, which had taken place over a long period of sinuous and tense diplomatic relationship between the two nations, have as their reason more than a century of French colonialism on the African territory, including Algeria, which ended up with a war that left deep scars, many still unhealed, on both sides. However, the French president seems to hope that by recognizing and admitting such facts, Algeria, due to its linguistics and geographic characteristics, may play again, an important role for French foreign policy in traditional areas of influence. Through this paper, we will try to answer to what extent is this possible, taking into account the Algerian history, and the burden of colonialism legacy left to the Algerian by the French colonialism.
