The aim of this text is to review and reflect on the educational world, to make a characterization of teachers based on some studies, especially through the voice of a group of teachers, regarding what it means to be a tea- cher, what a good teacher should have, the current problems of teachers, how they feel about their students per- ception, and some changes that are taking place in the country, in education today. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative questionnaire was applied to a group of primary school tea- chers in Mexico City. In addition to these data, the students of these teachers were also asked through another questionnaire about how their teacher is, what she should be like, and how they would like or would not like her to be, obtaining a general characterization of them. In these exercises, some of the problems of today’s education and of the teachers in particular are detected, among which the overload of work and the social devaluation to which they are subjected stand out. Characteristics and Problems 1 Profesora investigadora del Departamento de Política y Cultura, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. fpam1721@correo.xoc.uam.mx Resumen El objetivo de este texto es revisar y reflexionar sobre el mundo educativo, realizar una caracterización de las maestras a partir de algunos estudios, sobre todo a través de la voz de un grupo de maestras, respecto a lo que es ser maestra, las características que debería tener una buena maestra, las problemáticas actuales de las maes- tras, cómo se sienten percibidas por su alumnado, y algunos cambios que están teniendo lugar en la educación en el país en nuestros días. Para llevar a cabo dicho objetivo se aplicó un cuestionario cualitativo a un grupo de maestras de primaria de la ciudad de México. Para acompañar estos datos también se interrogó a través de otro cuestionario al alumnado de estas maestras en torno a cómo es su maestra, cómo debería ser, y como les gustaría o no les gustaría que fuese, obteniéndose una caracterización general de las mismas. En estos ejercicios se detectan algunos de los problemas de la educación actual y de las maestras en concreto, entre los que destacan la sobrecarga de trabajo y la desvalorización social de que son objeto.
