Abstract Over the last 50 years or so research on the patristic reception of the Scripture has brought to light the belief of the Fathers that the biblical text cannot be interpreted in depth, or authentically, without the grace of the Holy Spirit who has inspired the biblical authors. In this sense, the patristic tradition emphasizes that the interpretation of the Scripture is a gift of the Holy Spirit, and that the interpreter, or the exegete, is a charismatic one. Starting from this, the present study analyses the patristic tradition regarding the place of the Scripture in the spiritual life, in general, in order to answer the question about the utility of the Bible to those who do not yet possess the grace of the Holy Spirit. To this end, a series of patristic texts will be quoted and analysed, texts that demonstrate the place and the role of the Scriptures in the life of the believers. Guided by the patristic texts, the discussion will proceed along the following lines: 1) Scripture as a permanent guide and support in the Christian life; 2) the Scripture-Prayer binomial in the dynamics of spiritual life; 3) the purpose of reading and interpreting biblical texts according to the ascetical tradition; 4) the appeal to the Scriptures as an encounter and dialogue with the divine Logos. Preliminarii Numeroase studii relativ recente pun în lumină un aspect esenţial al exegezei Părinţilor, şi anume imposibilitatea omului de a-L cunoaşte pe Dumnezeu Cel Care Se revelează în dumnezeieştile Scripturi în afara expe- rinţei sau experierii lui Dumnezeu, mai concret, a Duhului lui Dumnezeu – „Ermineutul” prin excelenţă 1 .
