orfanel_chezska.zyra SCHOOL DRESS CODE IN THE LIGHT OF JUDITH BUTLER’S GENDER TROUBLE This research discusses that dress code in the Philippines has been part of the norm of schools and universities that are implemented to uphold formality, decency, discipline and protection to students. Dress codes among institutions have a good help and it is very evident in catholic schools for it promotes modesty, aligned with the values and beliefs that are being instilled to them. However, it is really alarming to witness that among these institutions, victim-blaming, harassment and humiliation are very prominent and is being tolerated by officials which is rooted from the clothing and physical expression of students. Sexist views of people are being triggered by these policies and it continually deprives the freedom of students to express themselves without being judged or dictated by the society. Self-expression has been a problem based on Judith Butler’s gender trouble, wherein it creates certain anxiety and fear among people especially if it does not conform to gender norms in the society which happens dominantly to women. Cross-dressing and heterosexual issues have been also a problem, not just in public places but also in schools and universities, which greatly discriminates the other gender and leads to oppression, disrespect and deprivation of their rights. Issues of sexual harassment and objectification among women here in the Philippines are currently emerging which are caused by factors such as culture, religion, social media, societal norms and standards and most of its academic institutions are giving emphasis on clothing, which can be found as the root cause of tolerance among other people and students in the society.
