Definition
Supply chain management: Supply chain manage-
ment (SCM) is the management of products or
services from the design phase to the different
production stages starting with raw material
extraction and ending with the delivery of the
product/service to the end consumer and, eventu-
ally, the reuse, recycling, or disposal phase,
depending on the product/service, industries, and
business models of firms. This includes the man-
agement of material, information, and capital
flows as well as the management of human
resources (HR) to deliver the product/service to
the consumers at a low cost, quickly and at the
right place, while still ensuring the quality of the
product/service.
Sustainable supply chain management:
Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM)
is the management of supply chains (SC) in a
way that integrates the sustainability objectives
and requirements defined by the firm, suppliers,
customers, and external stakeholders (e.g., con-
sumers, policy-makers, associations). These sus-
tainability objectives include economic, social,
environmental, and ethical targets that all mem-
bers of the supply chain must reach in order to
make the supply chain sustainable.

“sustainable supply chain management” (Ahi

strategic coordination of the traditional business

functions within a particular company and across
businesses within the supply chain, for the pur-
pose of improving the long-term performance of
the individual companies and the supply chain as
a whole” (Mentzer et al. 2001, p. 18).
SCM typically consists of managing a network
of businesses and service providers including raw
material producers, components manufacturers,
product manufacturers, retailers, and consumers.
