Email: irmakekinkarel@windowslive.com ABSTRACT In the last decades, Venezuela has become one of the Latin America countries targeted by the new Turkish foreign policy towards previ- ously overlooked regions. However, Turkey’s interest in Venezuela mainly remained on pa- per until 2016 when their relations began to fourish at diplomatic, political, and economic levels. Since then, Venezuelan President Nico- lás Maduro has visited Turkey four times, whereas Recep Tayyip Erdoğan became the frst Turkish President to ever visit Venezu- ela. The Maduro and Erdoğan administrations have become frm supporters of each other in international politics. In addition, 2018 trade volume between both countries surpassed the total trade volume of the previous fve years together. Using the IR theories of realism and constructivism, this paper discusses why Tur- key suddenly began pursuing an active foreign policy towards Venezuela, a Latin American country that is historically, culturally, and geographically distant to Turkey and with which relations were formerly stagnant. It is concluded that the AKP government under Erdoğan has received both material benefts RESUMEN En las últimas décadas, Venezuela se ha convertido en uno de los países de América Latina objetivo de la nueva política exterior de Turquía, en regiones hasta entonces olvidadas. Sin embargo, el interés de Turquía en Vene- zuela se mantuvo principalmente en el papel. No fue hasta 2016 que las relaciones entre Ve- nezuela y Turquía comenzaron a forecer en todos los niveles; diplomático, político y eco- nómico. Desde entonces, el presidente venezo- lano Nicolás Maduro realizó cuatro visitas a Turquía, mientras que Recep Tayyip Erdoğan se convirtió en el primer presidente turco en visitar Venezuela. Los gobiernos de Maduro y Erdoğan se han convertido en frmes partida- rios uno del otro en la política internacional. Asimismo, en 2018 el volumen de comercio entre ambos países superó el total de la suma del volumen comercial de los cinco años an- teriores.
