У статті розглянуто графічні тези академічних диспутів і панегіричні аркушеві гра- вюри з портретами, що були виконані українськими граверами в першій половині ХVIIІ ст. Увагу зосе- реджено на творах із персоніфікаціями, що деякі з них можна ідентифікувати власне як алегорії наук. Охарактеризовано особливості іконографії цих алегоричних фігур на основі порівняльного аналізу із зображеннями artes liberales та інших науко- вих дисциплін у західноєвропейській гравюрі того часу. Фрагментарність збереження українських пам’яток або й узагалі відсутність, до прикладу, графічних титульних аркушів наукових трактатів, де найчастіше можна побачити алегорії відповідних дисциплін, суттєво обмежують і спро- би окреслити різні іконографічні варіанти кожної з них. Тому більш доцільним видається пошук певних прототипів, а також порівняння контекстів поя- ви персоніфікацій наук у європейській і українській візуальних традиціях. Аллегории наук в украинской панегирической гравюре первой половины XVIII века. В статье рассмотрены графические те- зисы академических диспутов и панегирические листовые гравюры с портретами, выполненные украинскими граверами в первой половине XVIII в. Внимание сосредоточено на произведениях с пер- сонификациями, отдельные из которых можно идентифицировать именно как аллегории наук. Охарактеризованы особенности иконографии этих аллегорических фигур на основе сравнительного анализа с изображениями artes liberales и других научных дисциплин в западноевропейской гравюре того времени. Фрагментарная сохранность укра- инских памятников или вообще отсутствие, к примеру, графических титульных листов научных трактатов, где чаще всего можно увидеть алле- гории соответствующих дисциплин, существенно ограничивают и попытки определить различные иконографические варианты каждой из них. По- этому более целесообразным представляется по- иск определенных прототипов, а также сравнение контекстов появления персонификаций наук в евро- пейской и украинской визуальных традициях. Allegories of sciences in Ukrainian panegyric engraving of the first half of the 18 th cen- tury. Background. The first allegorical depictions of artes liberales and a number of philosophic disciplines in the Ukrainian panegyric engraving are known from the 1640’s. They are also present in preserved examples of Ukrainian graphic art of the first half of the 17 th cen- tury – allegories of sciences are an integral part of pan- egyric compositions, primarily print theses of academic disputes. In these semantically and visually complex structures personifications of sciences belong to less significant elements, especially if they represent artes liberales. In portrait panegyric engraving they usually also have an auxiliary role. Nevertheless, these alle- gories are characterized by the significant variability in attributes and coexistence of several iconographic types of each personification. This micro-problem in the studies of the 17 th –18 th ct. Ukrainian art is connected with key topics of modern research of Ukrainian graph- ics and painting of the time, which include the iden- tification of probable prototypes and primary sources of visual images as well as their consideration in the contemporary European context. Objectives. The aim of this article is to analyze the fea- tures of the iconography of sciences’ personifications in Ukrainian panegyric engraving of the first half of the 18 th century (particularly in portrait compositions and academic theses) in wider context of the Western Euro- pean pictorial tradition of the artes liberales’ allegories and personifications of the other scientific disciplines. Methods. The current research requires use of several methods of art historical analysis, among them context analysis, which aims at distinguishing the function and significance of the artistic work in the period it was cre- ated. The central methodological approach to the study of the personifications of sciences is the iconographic analysis, which allows to highlight the peculiar fea- tures of each figure, considering their attributes and taking into account their possible relations with other visual images and texts. We also rely on the compara- tive analysis to show similarities and distinct features of personifications in Ukrainian and Western European engravings. Results. The tradition of depicting the allegories of sci- ences in Ukrainian panegyric engraving, which origi- nated in the 17 th century, was continued in the 1700– 1730’s and is known now almost exceptionally from the printed academic theses of the time. These later examples of personifications clearly demonstrate the tendency to combine several iconographic types and attributes in a single figure, which was common in the European engraving already in the 17 th century. On the other part, quite often we deal with visually simplified personifications, which can be described as general- ized images of sciences. Usually they are arranged as a group of allegorical figures in identical or at least
