Abstract—A ψ-shaped micro-strip patch antenna is designed on
a square ground plane with an inverted E slot is presented. Ψ
patch is just below an inverted E slot on square ground plane and
it is fed with a co-axial probe. The effect of size and shape of the
slot on the ground plane and on patch are varied and are
proposed as antennas A to E . The proposed antenna design
parameters are varied to maximize the impedance bandwidth and
it is giving a maximum bandwidth of 29.7% (4.5Ghz – 6Ghz) and
a maximum gain of 5dBi. The proposed antenna is compared with
square patch on square shaped ground plane results in 34% area
reduction with improved bandwidth of 20%. All the proposed
antennas are mainly compared with respect to Return loss,
VSWR, Gain and Radiation efficiency. This antenna finds
application in ‘C’ band and RFID.

I. INTRODUCTION
Micro-strip patch antenna is more attracted because of its
size, weight, profile and easier to fabricate. It finds location in
wireless mobile communication and satellite communication.
The main limitations of MPA are narrow bandwidth, low gain
and low efficiency [1-2] etc.. There are many methods to
improve the bandwidth like multi-layered configuration,
stacked multi-resonator, planar multi-resonator configuration
and modified shape patch. Among these modified shape
method is easier one with respect to size and design [3-6]. A
Compact Broadband or multiband MPA is needed for personal
mobile communication and other applications.However,
generating multi-bands and size reduction are challenging jobs
for practical applications of micro-strip antenna i.e.
improvement of one degrades other.
Here we started with the design of square patch on square
ground plane resonating at 11Ghz giving a very less bandwidth

of 6%. Next we placed an inverted E slot on ground plane and
square patch is modified to ψ patch is proposed using co-axial
probe fed which is resonating at 6Ghz giving a maximum
bandwidth of 29.7% (4.5Ghz – 6Ghz) .The proposed antenna
is sensitive to length, width and position of the slot, by varying
these we designed five antennas giving a maximum gain of
5dBi with an area reduction of 34% compared to square patch
antenna with square ground plane.
II. DESIGN
First a Rectangular patch antenna with a square ground
plane is designed for a frequency of 10Ghz with the formulae
below to calculate the length, width and position of feed of the
micro-strip patch antenna[7].
