This study was an attempt to measure the relationship between psychological
well-Being and learned helplessness. Knowing the effects of ‘Area of living’ and
‘Age’ on psychological well-Being and helplessness were also taken in this study.
For this purpose, Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale and Mathur and Bhatnagar’s
Scale of Helplessness were administered on 100 Assistant Professors (Teachers)
of different subjects of different Universities/Colleges of Bihar,Jharkhand, West
Bengal. A significant negative correlation was obtained between psychological
well-being and learned helplessness. However, insignificant effect of ‘Area of living’
was obtained on psychological well-being and learned helplessness. However,
‘Age’ had a significant effect on psychological well-being but not on learned
helplessness. The result of this study was discussed in light of other previous
relevant researches.
Keywords: Psychological well-being, Learned Helplessness, Urban, Rural and Age.
Now-a-days in every society, quality of life has
become a matter of prime concern. The
fulfilment and realisation of the quality of life
are contingent upon the psychological well-
being of individuals of the society. Recently,
the notion of psychological well-being has
received attention due to changing societal
complexity and global issues. The concept of
complete health has also been dramatically
changed. Many studies show that mere
absence of symptoms of any illness (physical
or mental) cannot be understood as a state of
happiness or well-being (Keyes, 2002; Singer,
Ryff, Car & Magee 1998). It is the state of
someone who is functioning at a satisfactory
level of emotionaland behavioural adjustment.
Positive psychology defined it as an individual’s
ability to enjoy life, and to create a balance
between life activities and efforts to
achieve psychological resilience. In this
context of changed intellectual milieu, the area
of psychological well-being has grabbed the
attention of social and behavioural researchers
for further studies. Further, it has also been
observed that learned helplessness
(perception of uncontrollability) of a person
determines his/her level of psychological well-
being.

The concept of psychological well-being
is theoretically originated from earlier
psychological theories.The emphasis has been
made on an individual’s potential for a
meaningful life and self-realisation in the wake
of challenge (Keyes, Shmotkin and Ryff, 2002).
Ziskis (2010) evolved that psychological well-
being has six dimensions which are derived
from a range of theoretical accounts like
Maslow’s (1968) self-actualization, Allport’s
(1961) formulation of maturity, Roger’s (1961)
