Preceptors’ perceptions of preceptorship at Surgical Care Room
General Hospital Haji Adam Malik Medan

ABSTRACT: Preceptorship is a method of clinical learning. Interest preceptorship is to build and
develop the basic capabilities of students at the stage of professional education programs. The instructors
are called preceptors and the learners are called preceptees. This study aims to determine the perception
of the Preceptor of the implementation of preceptorship at the Surgical Care Room, General Hospital
Haji Adam Malik Medan. Design research is qualitative. The data collected was through focus group
discussions at surgical care room, general hospital Haji Adam Malik Medan. A Focus Group Discussion
(FGD) consist of six preceptors of surgical care room, two preceptors of the nurse educational institution
and four case managers of surgical care room and the deputy head of the surgical care room. Based on the
results of FGD has found four themes. The first theme, which was the duration of time for students that
needed guidance proved still be inadequate; the second theme is the decrease in ability of the students; the
third theme is the cooperation of educational institutions and the preceptors still be improved; the fourth
theme that was obtained was a moral burden of becoming a preceptor. Based on themes found it advisable
that preceptors involvement at every stage of learning. A preceptor should have additional knowledge
compared to nurses and the cooperation of educational institutions and the preceptors of clinical institu-
tions that still needs to be improved.

and Malender (2015) states that preceptorship has
become an important part, which begins with a
comprehensive orientation.
Preceptorship is symbolized as the heart of pro-
fessional education programs. If the heart experi-
ences problems then the professional education
program is where the problem starts. In fact, a pro-
fessional education program is a stage that must be
passed to be a competent nurse. The emphasis of
Preceptorship is mainly on critical thinking, reflec-
tion and focusing on ethics.
2 METHOD
This study aims to identify the perception of a pre-
ceptors of preceptorship at Surgical Care Units in
the Haji Adam Malik Hospital. This study used a
qualitative design. Participants are preceptors in
the surgical treatment of Haji Adam Malik hospi-
tal. Data were collected through focus group dis-
cussions. A focus group discussion (FGD) consist
consist of six preceptors of surgical care room, two

Public hospital Haji Adam Malik Medan, is known
to be a teaching hospital. The public hospital Haji
Adam Malik Medan is also a referral hospital for
the northern part of Sumatra Island. Almost all
students of educational institutions of nursing,
medicine, and obstetrics in northern Sumatera
carry out nursing practices in Public hospital Haji
Adam Malik Medan. As a referral hospital, the
hospital of Adam Malik has many patients with
very diverse causes.
According to Nurhidayah (2011), a competent
professional nurse in Indonesia must pass through
two stages: an academic education and a profes-
sional education stage. Phelps (2009) states that the
primary purpose of nursing education is to make
students competent nurses. While Nurachmah
(2011) states that, the learning pattern for the edu-
cation profession is internship and a pattern called
preceptorship guidance, so that educators at the
clinic can be called Preceptors and learners can be
called perseptees.
The focus of learning during the stage of profes-
sional education is gradually delegating an author-
ity. Maitland (2012) states that preceptorship is the
