Abstract Te site Židovar is situated in the vicinity of the village Orešac, Southern Banat district, Serbia. It is a multi-layered prehistoric site of the tell type, with sig- nifcant settlement remains from the period of the Late La Tène. Both the Eastern Celtic and the neighbour- ing Dacian populations recognised it as a convenient place to settle. On the basis of the archaeological re- sults gained up to now, it cannot be decisively conclud- ed whether the plateau had a genuine fortifcation or not during the Late La Tène. With its modest size, it could have acted as an acropolis, having a more spa- cious suburban zone at the neighbouring site Tobolica. Funerary practice connected with any of the La Tène populations remains completely unknown. No mat- ter how scarce our present knowledge of the La Tène settlements at Židovar, it can be recognised as a meet- ing place in the vibrant world of fast circulating goods and ideas. Te direct proof of this is the character of the Židovar treasure - the hoard of decorative objects - with its diversity of the objects as well as its exceptional quality of manufacture and high aesthetic criteria of the artisans. Keywords Second Iron Age, Southern Pannonia, Židovar, set- tlement, Eastern Celts, Dacians Te facts that it is one of the best preserved multi- layered prehistoric settlements of the tell type in the Serbo-Croatian part of the mid-Danube basin and that it comprises signifcant stratigraphic sequences of the Bronze and Iron Ages, including La Tène, makes the site Židovar the polygon for testing the role of Celtic heritage on the fringes of the La Tène oikumene in the dawn of the new era. Accordingly, the objective of the paper is not only to briefy present nature of the site, history of research, current state of investigation along with the results of research, but to identify indicators of contacts between the local La Tène population with the world of the Mediterranean civilisation, with the Židovar treasure as the focal point, and to compare some of the elements an oppidum in the land of the Eastern Celts is expected to consists of (e.g. fortifca- tion, suburban zones, necropolises) with the data the Židovar La Tène settlement has revealed up to now. Židovar (Fig. 1) is situated in the vicinity of the vil- lage Orešac, Southern Banat district, Serbia, at the east- ern edge of the Deliblatska pešcara – a large sandy de- sert. Židovar and its presumed suburban zones are an integral part of the loess plateau which rises some 30m above the valley of the river Karaš and its tributaries, now incorporated in the irrigation system Danube- Tisa-Danube.
