Abstract Security have become an issue ever since the birth of cloud computing. Cloud computing like every computer network has security vulnerabilities. A network intrusion is any unauthorized activity on a computer network by an attacker. Intrusion detection system proffers a layer of defence, monitoring network traffic for suspicious predefined activities / pattern and alerting network administrators when suspicious traffic is detected. This paper seeks to address these vulnerabilities and reviews some open source tools that can be implemented to help secure the cloud computing environment. Open source tools that are reviewed include Snort, Bro, Suricata, Open WIPS and Security Onion. Keywords: Cloud computing, Intrusion Detection, Intrusion Prevention, Visualization, Iaas, Paas, Saas, Security tools, Snort, Bro, Suricata, Open WIPS and Security Onion.
