The Islamic Milieu of ‘Traditional Learning Institutions’ in Kerala: Development & Evolution Sirajuddin Shaikh Senior Secondary First Year National Institute for Islamic and Contemporary Studies (NIICS), Darul Huda Islamic University Abstract: The Islamic world has seen enormous numbers of arts, literature, philosophy, sciences and technology both by preserving and building upon earlier traditions and by adding their anew inventions and innovations. In Kerala, Religious educational systems entering Masjid had been disseminated just after advent of Islam itself. Islamic education was greatly influenced by the traditional Hindu elite class systems like Othu Palli. Teachers and preachers too had won higher status in the society. Othupalli was supported by higher education palli Dars, but it always lacked behind in preferring the writing methods. The advent of colonial educational system was a major cited reason for looking the traditional learning institutions down and its declining which consequently paved the way for the evolution to Madrasa system. However, the traditional system has a significant role in reforming and educating the society from its grass-root level. In the nineteen century, various tremendous attempts were made in Kerala to reform Islam with a view to reconciling Islam with modernity. Notwithstanding the influences of reformisms in the larger quantity, the responses towards colonialism were varying that determined the focus and nature of religious reform among the Muslims of the region, especially among the Kerala Muslim. And this caused immense contribution of Ulama of Kerala in self-making of Kerala Muslims. The paper will mainly disclose different focal points of earlier religious education systems, decline and causes, and evolution to modern and Madrasa systems along with some further contributions of the towering personalities that led the era to achieve the self-making for Kerala Muslims.
