JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE, VOL. 66, NO. 5, OCT. 2019, PP. 491-513 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, CAIRO UNIVERSITY INVESTIGATING BIO-MORPHISM APPROCH TO ENHANCE STRUCTURE’S CREATIVITY AND EFFICIENCY I. ABDELSABOUR 1 ABSTRACT Most architects believed that nature offered many countless ideas as a source of inspiration. They showed the overlapping between biology and architecture through the bio-morphism to illustrate its effect on the improving of the structural design creativity. This research was initiated with the objective of enhancing structure’s creativity and efficiency by investigating bio-morphism to be utilized in the modern architectural applications by creating a more flexible, lightweight and durable so as high-performance architectural structures in terms of form, forces and material. The visual observations were attained to define the potential benefits of biological forms found in nature. The research findings indicated the possibility of integrating biomorphic design process into the structural design. Furthermore, the results designated how architects could design innovative structure after their requirements. KEYWORDS: Biomorphic, Structure System, Structure Efficiency, Digital Tools 1. INTRODUCTION Scientists considered nature as the source of studies in every scientific branch, by analyzing the persevering of organisms alive via its flexible and dynamic structures. It appeared from the overlapping between biology and architecture, by presenting successful architectural progress by transferring the life’ biological features into the built environment and architecture. Bio-mimicry and biomorphic principals could offer links between what nature had and what the architect designed that varied in materials, construction techniques, structural systems and the aesthetics features. 1 Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Mattaria Branch, Helwan University.
