Abstract Studies about the prevalence of personal therapy for therapists and or therapists-in-training have been done in the United States and Europe, but no known studies in this area have been done in Africa involving Africans. This survey study, the prevalence of personal therapy for therapists-in- training across the world is an attempt to look at this phenomenon from a global perspective. A 5- Questions questionnaire was posted to Facebook, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn targeting student psychologists or counselors and professionals. Data were collected from 28 respondents from the US, England, Nigeria, Republic of South Africa, and Kenya. Descriptive Statistics were employed using SPSS ver. 21. The findings revealed that personal therapy is practiced across the world, although, Asia was not represented in the study. 86% of Africans (100% in Kenya, 80% in Nigeria, and 80% in the Republic of South Africa) reported being part of required personal therapy, 33.3% in the U.S, and 100% in England. Some respondents who had counseling education where personal therapy was required reported they had never been to therapy. Further research is required, and program evaluation recommended. Keyword: Personal Therapy, Prevalence, Mandatory/Required Therapy Introduction In response to debates among counselor educators whether counselors-in-training should themselves undergo individual counseling while in training, some researchers have made efforts to study the prevalence, the outcomes and the challenges of personal therapy for counselors-in- training. The available findings express, majorly, the practices of personal therapy in the United States of America (Norcross, Strausser-Kirtland, and Missar, 1988; Strozier and Stacey, 2001; Norcross and Guy, 2005) Europe, and few Asian countries (Orlinsky, et al., 2005). While personal therapy is an integral part of training for future therapists require certain number of hours of mandatory personal therapy to qualify for admission to the profession, virtually in every part of the world including Africa, there seems to be no attention or research data showing the prevalence, the outcomes and challenges of personal therapy within the African continent. This quick research is to establish the prevalence of personal therapy for counselors-in-training in all continents of the world excluding Asia. Method The research method employed is a quantitative method using survey design. The research instrument was simple questionnaire comprising of five questions: (1) In which country did you or are you receiving your psychological/counseling education? (2) Which is your specific area of study: Psychology or Counseling? (3) Is Personal Therapy required in your professional training or development? (4) Have you ever been to personal therapy as a student or professional psychologist or counselor? (5) Have you ever been to therapy in your lifetime? The questionnaire was posted on Facebook, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn, and responses were expected through the same media including email. The target population was anyone who is undergoing or had undergone psychological or counseling training irrespective of the level of education and the location. 28
