It is a social evil, which grows along with urbanization. Poverty and deficit of housing in rapidly growing cities are reasons of emergence of slums of Chhattisgarh State. Nutritional problems like protein energy malnutrition (PEM), anemia and vitamin A deficiency continue to plague a large proportion of Bilaspur, Raipur, Raigarh, Durg, Bhilai city slum children. The diets and nutritional status of urban slum children is far away from being satisfactory. Another distressing feature is the lack of any significant improvement over the years in this population. Most common causes of malnutrition include faulty infant feeding practices, impaired utilization of nutrients due to infections and parasites, inadequate food and health security, poor Environmental conditions and lack of proper child care practices. Malnutrition is found among children in households that have no shortage of food. The period of 6 months to 2 years when the child is dependent on someone to feed him/her, has the maximum malnutrition. Also, there are many taboos and beliefs regarding foods suitable for a child without any scientific basis.
