Cognitive-behavioraltheoriesplayanimportantroleinthe
studyofsmokingcessationandrelapse(Marlatt& .Gordon,
1980,1985
;Pechacek&Danaher,1979 ;Shiffman&Wills,
1985).Inoneofthemostinfluentialanalysesoftherelapsepro-
cess,MarlattandGordon(1985)proposedthatrelapseisdeter-
minedbyacombinationoffactorsthatincludehigh-risksitua-
tions,copingresponses,andself-efficacyappraisals
.According
tothismodel,ahigh-risksituationsetsthestageforrelapse,
andaneffectivecopingresponseisnecessarytowithstandthe
temptationtosmoke .Self-efficacyappraisalsinvolveexpecta-
tionsaboutone'scapacitytocopewiththesehigh-risksitua-
tions.
Akeyconstructinthismodelisself-efficacy,whichhasbeen
definedbyBandura(1977)as"theconvictionthatonecansuc-
cessfullyexecutethebehaviorrequiredtoproducethe[desired]
outcomes"(p .193).Efficacyjudgmentsdifferfromglobaleval-
uationsofcompetency(e.g.,self-esteem)inthattheyarehy-
pothesizedtoreflectperceivedcompetencyinspecificsitua-
tions
.Moreover,Bandura(1977,1986)hasproposedthatthese
efficacyexpectationsmediatebehaviorchangeandoftenpredict
behaviorbetterthandoespreviousorconcurrentbehavior
.
Consistentwiththisformulation,MarlattandGordon(1985)
proposedthatforaddictivebehaviors,theprobabilityofrelapse
