Abstract
A place which doesn’t have good quality as pub lic space cannot create a sense of attachment for its visitors,
therefore as the time passes the place will be a forgotten place and might even be destroyed due to lack of
preservation. Unfortunately, historic quarters as a place of depicting city’s rich culture are in danger of
demolition. This paper centres its focus on St Armenia’s and St Carmelite’s Public area (ACPA) in the Walled city
of Famagusta which reflects a long unique history is in danger of falling into lost space. The aim of this research
is to introduce methods for increasing the quality of lost space by discussing the major factors for improving the
quality of place. Both qualitative and qualitative approach methods used in this research and the techniques
adopted are personal observation, sketches, depth interviews and questionnaire with 80 respondents. The
research revealed that there is a relationship between the quality of place and the lost space in the ACPA. This
research study proposed that mix use functionality by decreasing aestheti c problems of the site could solve the
problem of lost space in the ACPA.
