Non-native pronunciations of English by: Slusarz, Michal Adam Alumnus: Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT Year: 2019-2020 Abstract This paper research is based on my experience as a teacher of English. Throughout years of experience, I noticed some common “problems” in their intonation, phonology and pronunciation as these were carried very close to their native language(s). Thus, I started to analyze their speeches and I found, among them, many similarities. Most of my students were Italians. Nonetheless, I also did teach some other students who were not Italians and I had the possibility to analyze their speech in detail when I had the chance but sometimes less in detail. Speaking about some languages is very reductive, for this reason I decided to concentrate this research on European languages (Romance, Germanic, and Slavic), and two Semitic languages (Arabic and Hebrew). 1 I started analyzing the ocial English Proficiency Index (EPI) from global language training company Education First (EF), and I analyzed the languages with I had a direct contact. When dealing with pronunciation part, phonemes are written inside slashes (/ /), whereas allophones are written inside square brackets ([ ]). Due to its vast amount of dialect, I mainly tried to analyze the most common dialect which I 1 came into contact with: Levantine Arabic and Maghrebi Arabic. Page of 1 23
