Publicado em 1994, recebeu o prêmio internacional Jean-Monnet em 1995. O romance dialoga com a história ao apresentar uma releitura da ditadura de Salazar em Portugal, apresentando o modus operandi do regime salazarista ao perseguir aqueles que eram contra a ditadura instituída. O fato de trazer uma perspectiva histórica, que revisa o discurso oficial, possibilita uma análise pelo viés da metaficção historiográfica, além de trazer modificações estruturais ao gênero romance, o que permite enquadrá-lo numa escrita pós-moderna. Além disso, Afirma Pereira promove uma reflexão sobre a identidade do personagem que no início é um homem calmo, acostumado a uma vida rotineira, sem planos futuros, com fixação com a m orte. No entanto, à medida que ele vai se envolvendo com outros personagens, contrários à ditadura, sua identidade vai se transformando. Influenciado pelas circunstâncias, Pereira muda seu posicionamento político e o modo de ver a vida, a ponto de mudar o seu destino. ABSTRACT This paper presents an analysis of the novel Pereira Mantains, by Italian author Antônio Tabucchi (1943- 2012). Published in 1994, the novel received the international Jean Monnet Award in 1995. It establishes a dialogue with History in presenting a reinterpretation of Salazar’s dictatorship in Portugal, showing the modus operandi of Salazar’s regime in pursuing those who were against the dictatorial instit ution. Because the novel carries a certain historical perspective, rewriting the official discourse, it is possible to analyze it through the tools of historiographic metafiction; as it contains structural modifications to the genre of the novel as well, it is also possible to classify it as postmodern writing. Moreover, Pereira Mantains gives way to reflection on the identity of its main character – who, at the beginning, is a calm man, used to an ordinary life, with no plans and a fixation with death. Nonetheless, as he begins to get involved with other characters who oppose the dictatorship, his identity begins to transform. Influenced by the circumstances, Pereira changes his political stance and view of life, to the point of altering his destiny.
