Abstract
To assess the research performance of state universities of Uttar Pradesh in science and
technology field, the present study analyzed all the 23 state universities of the state in
Scopus database from 2006 to 2010. All the universities were searched in the database
using the “affiliation search” and it was found that only 11 universities were indexed by
the database. It was revealed that the University of Lucknow is the top ranked university
in the state, followed by Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University. It was also found
that out of the eleven universities, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel University of Agriculture
and Technology was the least productive university in science and technology in the
selected period of study. The study further analyzed the various research patterns of the
publications like the yearly distribution, subjects areas covered, document types used,
languages used for communication, etc. Besides, it gives the top 50 ranked list of journals

INTRODUCTION
Science and technology is used as an effective
instrument for growth and change. It is being
brought into the mainstream of economic
planning in the sectors of agriculture, industry
and services. The strength and level of
national development is reflected in the
processes and procedures of science and
technology. Policy makers, administrators and
politicians as well as the general public view
science and technology as an essential
instrument of societal transformation. They are
affected by the values and choices of
individuals and governments and in turn have
a significant impact on society. The world as
we know it today has been affected in many
important ways by science and technology like
our understanding of earth and space, of the
workings of the human body and of the ways
in which living things interact. The technology
has revolutionized the way we communicate
and made vast changes in our lives through the
discovery of new drugs and materials [1].
As science and technology is the backbone of
any country, research activities in this field are
thus paramount and imperative for each and
every nation including India. The volume of
scientific literature produced by researchers in
a country can be used as an index of the level
of research activity in that country and the
whole research circle is framed by the
participation of large number of research
institutions/organizations.
One of the major players of research in India
in this field, are the Universities which are
supposed to have proper infrastructure to
undertake exhaustive research activities within
their campuses. They produce their research
output in the form of various publications and
the impact of these publications determines the
quality performances of the universities.
It is in this context that the present study was
undertaken in the state universities of Uttar
Pradesh and their research productivity in the
field of science and technology analyzed.
