Abstract
T
here are various losses associated with passenger
vehicle that affect its fuel economy as it is being
operated. Tese losses include losses at engine, drive-
line, aerodynamic and rolling losses. While engine, driveline
and aerodynamic losses are inherent with the vehicle due to
large number of parts that are assembled together, rolling loss
is associated with the vehicle tires and it is the only part of the
vehicle that comes in contact with the road surface. Te rolling
resistance of infated tires is an important component of
rolling resistance to vehicle motion and contributes to vehicle
fuel consumption. Hence the efect of tire parameters such as
infation pressure, speed and load are the subject of much
current interest. Also efect of type of infation fuid on tire
performance is a need of investigation. Tis work is focused
on the design and development of tire testing setup to test the
tire performance parameters like rolling resistance and tire
temperature by varying the load, speed, infation pressure and
infation fuids. Tire 135/70 R12 65 S was selected for testing.
Te test was conducted under various loads, speed, infation
pressure and infation fuids were air and nitrogen. Te result
of experimental analysis shows that there is increase in rolling
resistance and tire temperature with increase in speed and
load. Also, the rolling resistance and tire temperature increases
with decreasing the infation pressure. For determining the
better performance of tire among air and nitrogen, the test
was conducted by varying the infation pressure, load and
speed. Te results of experimental analysis shows that the tire
with nitrogen gas resulted in to lower rolling resistance and
lower tire temperature as compared with air.
Introduction
T
he tires of the road vehicle play an important role in
maintaining stability of the vehicle on road. When a
vehicle is driven on the road, the only parts of the
vehicle is in contact with the road are its tires and all the forces
exerted on the vehicle by the road are transmitted through
the tire. Te tire provides forces and resistance which afect
the dynamics and control performance of the vehicle. Te
basic functions of tire is to provide interface between vehicle
to road surface, to support the vehicle load, to develop longi-
tudinal force for acceleration, braking and to absorb road
impacts and also to resist cornering force for safe cornering
[1]. Te performance of a vehicle on road is depending on tire
construction, infation pressure and the kind of surface rela-
tionship with road and tire and hence, it is necessary to under-
stand the efect of these parameters on tire performance. Tere
is also an increasing trend to infate tire with nitrogen as an
infation fuid. In recent year number of car accidents in India
has increased signifcantly. Te depleting fuel sources have
brought focus on best possible utilization of fuel. One of the
major causes of accident is failure of tire at highspeed on
highways. This may be because of lack of sufficient tire
infation pressure, poor tire condition and its maintenance.
Te fuel consumption of the vehicle is also afected by the tire
quality and its operating parameters. Tire performance
depends on many factors such as rolling resistance, cornering
stifness, tire temperature, tire wear, tire ride, handling and
tire traction. So, it is necessary to study the efect of operating
parameters on tire performance along with efect of infating
fuids on tire performance. Performance evaluation of tire on
road is a difcult task, hence it is possible to test tire on a test
bench in the laboratory.
In this article, rolling resistance and tire temperature
have been tested at diferent tire infation pressure, infation
fuids, speed and load on developed drum type tire testing
setup. Tire Performance test were conducted on the designed
and developed tire testing setup. For testing of tire perfor-
mance a passenger car tire is selected with rating as
135/70R12 65 S. Te testing of tire performance is carried
out at constant infation pressure and at di ferent loads wise
30%, 50%, 70% of the maximum load capacity of tire and at
diferent speed such as 30 km/hr, 40 km/hr, 50 km/hr,
60 km/hr and 65 km/hr. Also same tire were tested by
infating air and nitrogen gas.
