DEFENSE MECHANISM -Psychological strategy that are unconsciously use to protect a person from axiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings. -Certain reacon towards parcular a situaon to defend ourselves. TYPES OF DEFENSE MECHANISM SPLITTING -All is black or white, good or bad. There is NO GRAYZONE. Ex: All the members of group x are very nice and all the members of group y are terrible. DENIAL -Avoid becoming aware of contradictory informaon or painful situaon. Ex: You were caught several mes in violent behaviour due to alcohol consumpon but you don’t believe that you have a problem with alcohol. PROJECTION -Aribute thoughts and feelings on the other people. Ex: I don’t like that woman Alex >> I know that she hates me, I know. INTROJECTION -Unconscious imitaon Ex: Child plays and dresses like the superhero he admires the most. SOMATIZATION -Psychological problems are transforms in physical problems. Ex: I had a terrible headache during the interview. REGRESSION -Going back psychologically to an early stage of development. Ex: An adult male only watch cartoons since he rered. BLOCKING -Temporarily unable to recall a memory. Ex: I just do not remember the name! I know it. It’s on the p of my tongue. DISSOCIATION -Detached from ones experience, separated. Ex: When the woman was being raped, she felt like she was watching it from above. UNDOING -Acng out the reserve of the unacceptable behaviour. Ex: Pyromaniac pung down fire. REACTION FORMATION -Inadmissible impulse is transformed in its opposite. Ex: Pyromaniac becomes a fire fighter. RATIONALIZATION -Jusfying one’s conduct by offering plausible or socially acceptable reasons in place or real reasons. Excuses are made up to hide or disguise the true move. Types: 1. SOUR GRAPES-Pretending to dislike what one really likes. Ex: Failure to enter the school. “The school is way too far from our house.” 2. SWEET LEMON- Pretending to like what one really dislike. Ex: I prefer this university since it is close to home. ISOLATION OF AFFECT “Poker Face” -The absence of emoonal response towards a situaon or reality. Ex: She didn’t show any kind of emoon during the funeral service. DISPLACEMENT -Behaviour, drive or emoon redirected to another person or thing. Ex: My boss was angry with a client and started yelling to his wife on the phone. REPRESSION -Unknowingly placing an unpleasant memory or thought in the unconscious. Ex: Not remembering incident in which you witnessed a crime. MATURE DEFENSE MECHANISM SUPPRESSION -Conscious blocking of unwanted memory. -The conscious defense mechanism. Ex: I prefer to forget that my lovely cat was run over by a truck. SUBLIMATION -In appropriate impulse or behaviour into acceptable context. Ex: A pyromaniac working at a crematorium. COMPENSATION -The act of covering up unwanted behaviour or trait with more desirable behaviour or trait. Ex: Perceived by others ugly, Ginalingan sa pag-aaral para maging honor student.
