ABSTRACT
Network Scalability became a major concern these days for Wireless Sensor
Networks because of their resource constrained nature and increasing number of
applications which need to satisfy various communicational and computational
requirements. Many key predistribution schemes have been designed to achieve a
significant trade-off between energy consumption and scalability of network, but which
scheme is more efficient is still debatable. Unital design in combinatorial mathematics
is a novel technique which can be used for key predistribution is WSN’s. This paper
presents a novel key predistribution scheme based on this unital design. The proposed
scheme is compared with several other existing predistribution schemes and the
performance results obtained shows better trade-off between energy consumption and
scalability than many other schemes.
Key words: Wireless sensor networks, Scalability, Key management.

1. INTRODUCTION
Wireless Sensor Networks will be generally used as a part of the not so distant future because
of their expansiveness of uses in many fields like military, agriculture, home monitoring etc.
Wireless sensor networks consists of small power and battery constrained named nodes which
are capable of performing *wireless communication over a limited area. [1]. Key predistribution
is a technique of loading each node with a set of keys before the deployment. Many key
predistribution schemes are developed by various researchers in the past years which provides
a better maintainence of key management in WSN’s. Basically a key predistribution scheme
consists of three phases. They are: 1) Key Predistribution, 2) Shared Key Discovery and 3)
Secure link establishment. In the first phase each node is loaded with a set of secret keys from
the key pool. In the shared key discover phase, each sensor node finds other sensor node to
communicate and a secure link is established when two nodes share a common secret key. In
the final stage paths are established using these links forming a connected graph of network.
