In recent years, however, this critcal relatonship has de-escalated due to a growing collaboraton in shaping a complemental news repertoire. This study examines how social and traditonal news use and users’ perceptons on professional journalism afect citzens’ news content creaton. Based on survey data from Spain, we frst fnd that social media use for news and users’ positve perceptons on professional journalism predict citzens’ news producton behavior. Second, social media use for news and traditonal media con- sumpton are explored as additve moderators over the relatonship of users’ perceptons on professional journalism on citzens’ news content creaton, showing a positve signifcant efect. This study contributes to current conversatons on the potental symbiotc associaton between professional and citzens journalism, arguing that citzens’ perceptual appraisals on professional journalism are key in fostering public’s partcipaton through news content creaton. Introducton In recent years, the craf of journalism has experienced a substantal shif due to a panoply of technological and profes- sional innovatons (Túñez-López; Toural-Bran; Cacheiro-Requeijo, 2018) which have disrupted the identtes and prac- tces of most news-workers worldwide (Goyanes, 2018). Traditonally, journalists were the central nexus between facts and audiences, the key to informing citzens about public afairs and politcs (Berganza; Lavín; Piñeiro-Naval, 2017). However, with the emergence and popularizaton of digital technologies, personal blogs, and social media services, many users have been empowered to create, and disseminate their views and perspectves in valuable news contents (Suárez-Villegas, 2017). In this context, citzens’ news content creaton or “citzen journalism”, has challenged and/or complemented the traditonal ethos of professional journalism, amplifying its boundaries, scope, and roots (Paulussen et al., 2007).
