ETHNIC BORDERS AND DISCOURSE IN COVID-19 TIMES. A REFLECTION REGARDING AN OBJECT OF STUDY Jaime González González Universidad de Talca, Chile Elizabeth Torrico-Ávila Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias Sociales y Educación Universidad de Atacama, Chile ABSTRACT The article reflects on the construction of ethnic borders in immigrant populations in times of COVID-19 in Chile. For this, a critical path is provided on the meanings of "ethnic border" and "public discourse", analyzing the theoretical marriage between both concepts. Along with this, a series of illustrative cases of speeches by opinion leaders in the written press about the pandemic and migrant populations in Chile are contemplated. The cases provide a first empirical input to the work of theoretical reflection on the ethnic-discourse-foreign border pairing in contexts of international migration. It is concluded that the speeches of these opinion leaders identify the migrant as a unitary community different from the Chilean one, showing the former as a diminished humanity and potentially spreading the pandemic in the country.
