In particular, studies proposed various approaches to gain, maintain and encourage learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) over the last three decades. The relationship levels between students' cultural backgrounds and areas predicted by the L2 culture and as explained by the L2 Motivation Model, significantly affect their attitudes and motivations towards learning academic subjects. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, motivational factors of a group of foreign language course students who have previously learned EFL or are taking English courses. In particular, EFL students in various universities in the motivation levels and types of motivation they have when learning English as a foreign language in Turkey is aimed. This study was carried out with the survey method, which is one of the quantitative research approaches. Participants in this study were selected from the language course students in Turkey. Data were collected through a questionnaire from 300 language course students who took foreign language courses or had taken before, randomly selected. In order to be a participant, there were requirements to take English lessons in any department of the university. This study was carried out using the questionnaire method, one of the quantitative research approaches. Data collection was done online using three data collection tools put into the GoogleDocs system. The findings revealed that gender, motivation and age are two major factors that significantly affect the levels of academic achievement. In addition, gender and age play significant roles for higher levels of motivation for the EFL learners. Keywords: EFL student, motivation, English as a foreign language.
