SUGGESTOPEDIA METHOD FOR LEARNING ENGLISH Imelda Aisyah Nasution 7 th Semester in State Islamic University of North Sumatera ABSTRACT English is the most widely spoken language around the world. English as an international language is required to be known by all people in the world to facilitate international communication. However, very often English learners find this language a difficult language to learn. So, to overcome problems like this Georger Lozanov, an educator, psychotherapist and physicist from Bulgaria, created a language learning method that makes language learners find it easy to learn language. This method, which was created in 1978, is called the suggestopedia method. Suggestopedia is one of the many methods of learning English in the world. This method is less well known but in reality in the field, this method is actually often used by language teachers, especially English in class, without realizing it. This suggestopedia method comes from Bulgaria. This method was first developed by an educator, psychotherapist and physicist named George Lozanov around 1978. Lozanov argues that relaxation and concentration techniques can help students to open up their subconscious resources and be able to acquire and master a larger quantity of vocabulary and also structures that are more stable than they think. George based this method on several disciplines such as yoga, classical music, parapsychology and autogenic therapy, which he said could increase the pace of learning 5 to 50 times the usual rate. Through training with special techniques, it is possible for students to develop their super memories and be able to learn a larger quantity of language material in a very short time. In fact, many experts have conducted research on this suggestopedia, but still more language teachers use the lecture method in teaching language to their students. The lecture method is considered an easy method and there are not many rules, the teacher only needs to explain the theory and the students are sufficient to be good listeners. The lecture method actually makes the interaction between teacher and student very little, that is why it is necessary to develop language teaching methods for language learners. Lozanov noted the similarity of hypnosis and suggestion and concluded that there was a difference between a state of hypnosis and the process of suggestion which occurs in all of the conditions of human existence. Transcendental Meditation and fantasy trips both utilize relaxation as does the suggestopedic process. The scope of this study has been limited to Suggestopedia and its application to the American college classroom.
