[*] ___________________________________________________________ Who is Nietzsche's Socrates? ADNAN ESENYEL Düzce University Received: 30.06.2020Accepted: 24.07.2020 Abstract: Socrates has always had a decisive and important place in Nietzsche's philosophical corpus. Because for Nietzsche, the organization which we call Western philosophy is basically a Socratic project. That is why, according to Nietzsche, the true intention of Western philosophy and metaphysics as an ac- tivity embodied in Socrates, cannot be revealed without conducting a discus- sion about Socrates and his personality. In this context, the present study tries to follow the development of the Socratic type depicted by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, The Gay Science and Twilight of Idols, respectively. Because these three works exhibit an organic unity by forming a mutual question- answer dialogue and presenting a portrait of Socrates which is getting deeper at every phase.
