German Life and Letters 64:1 January 2011 0016-8777 (print); 1468–0483 (online) GENDERED HEIMAT DISCOURSE AND THE POETICS OF THE ‘GEDEHNTER BLICK’ IN WILHELM GENAZINO’S MITTELM ¨ ASSIGES HEIMWEH ANNE FUCHS ABSTRACT This article discusses Wilhelm Genazino’s poetics of the ‘prolonged gaze’ as a response to the rapid production of social and cultural obsolescence in our technology-driven age. It shows how Genazino’s protagonists attune their idiosyncratic perception to objects and events that normally lie below the threshold of perception. In this way they cultivate a state of perplexity that allows them to break with habitualised patterns of perceiving and inhabiting the city. The second part of the article then turns to the parodic re-enactment of gendered Heimat discourse in Mittelm¨ aßiges Heimweh. In this post-Heimat novel, Genazino employs the prolonged gaze to overturn the traditional link between womanhood and Heimat. In contrast with the city where this mode of perception ensured the protagonist’s magical, albeit fragile connection with the environment, in the countryside the same mode of perception results in his radical exclusion from the rural world. However, while nature’s indifference to man’s concerns underscores the fact that Heimat is a discursive construct which is always implicated in power relations, the narrative validates the protagonist’s longing to belong as an anthropological need that has not been made obsolete by the conditions of our supermodern age. Der Artikel analysiert Wilhelm Genazinos Poetik des ‘gedehnten Blicks’ als Antwort auf die soziale und kulturelle Produktion von beschleunigter Veralterung im Kontext einer durch rapiden technologischen Wandel charakterisierten Epoche. Genazinos Protagonisten kultivieren eine idiosynkratische Wahrnehmung, die Objekte und Ereignisse jenseits der gew¨ ohnlichen Aufmerksamkeitsschwelle in den Blick nimmt, um mittels eines perplexen Effekts die habitualisierten Wahrnehmungsmuster der Leser zu st¨ oren. Der zweite Teil untersucht, wie Genazinos post-Heimatroman Mittelm¨ aßiges Heimweh den gedehnten Blick im Kontext einer parodistischen Relekt ¨ ure des gender-spezifischen Heimatdiskurses erprobt, um so die traditionelle Verbindung zwischen den Topoi der Weiblichkeit und Heimat zu unterminieren. W¨ ahrend in der urbanen Stadtlandschaft der gedehnte Blick des Protagonisten eine zwar fragile, aber dennoch magische Verbindung zu seiner Umwelt herstellt, bewirkt die auf die l¨ andliche Heimat angewandte Perspektive nun eine radikale Fremderfahrung. Obwohl Genazinos gedehnte Beschreibungen damit die diskursive und gender-spezifische Konstruiertheit des Konzepts Heimat in den Blick r¨ ucken, profiliert der Roman insgesamt das Verlangen nach Zugeh¨ origkeit als ein anthropologisches Grundbed ¨ urfnis, das auch im Kontext der beschleunigten Supermodernit¨ at nicht obsolet geworden ist.
