Its closing date (October 28, 1962) coincided with the end of the so-called Cuban Missile Crisis (October 16–28, 1962) – the greatest political crisis in post-World War II history between superpowers in possession of nuclear weapons, caused by the secret deployment of medium-range ballistic missiles by the Soviet Union in Cuba, which posed a threat to US territory.
