Director/Producer Howard Hawk prefers replacing Victorian stereotypes for middle and upper-class white women often portrayed in films as domesticated angels with the “girl Friday” archetypes. To achieve these gender switches effectively Hawks films screwball comedies to entertain audiences with narratives paradoxes and inconsistent premises. His Girl Friday 1940, is the second film adaption of The Front Page stage play, written by John Guare. The Front Page, the first of several film adaptations finished production before the mandatory Production Code as such the film narrative seldom changes the stage play. Howard Hughes, producer and Lewis Milestone, director scripted dialogues about promiscuous sexual intercourse, prostitution, and racial politics. The Front Page tells the story of a bombastic Chicago tabloid editor Walter Burns and his star reporter Hildebrand (Hildy) Johnson. About to be married, Johnson wants to walk away from Burns' Post Newspaper but gets lured into covering a final story about the impending, politically motivated hanging of Earl Williams, convicted of killing a black policeman (Ref: Roger Fristoe & Rob Nixon, TCM film article). The opening frame reads, "This story is laid in a mythical kingdom." The ensemble has white men in roles as the news journalist, policemen, sheriff, Italian gangsters, and politicians. The actresses, who have less dialogue than actors, portray a prostitute, mother, and a devoted fiancée. The slapstick comedy ridicules yellow Page 1 of 4
