1 Instrument validity trial to assessing risk-facing decisions at work: the CFR test 1 Luis López-Mena 2 Psicólogo Abstract. Generally, the selection of low-skilled or semi-skilled personnel has been a process carried out in a careless or poor manner without considering job safety. This issue is relevant considering that low skilled workers suffer the majority of serious work-related accidents and injuries. This is also the case even after safety training, which usually employs normative or traditional content, without data on the safe / unsafe behaviors of workers themselves due to lack of knowledge regarding this data. A psychological evaluation instrument was developed to improve selection and training processes. The purpose of this tool is to establish the level of pressure exerted by six factors on a worker's behavior at the time they are deciding between safe or unsafe behavior when faced with an uncertain situation at work (risk). The six factors were identified based on existing technical literature. Six factors that push a worker's behavior toward risk were identified as follows: 1) stress or tension management; 2) impulse control; 3) social skills; 4) self-esteem; 5) control over irrational ideas, and 6) life goals. To build the CFR test it was administered to a preliminary sample of 787 base workers (helpers, construction workers, bricklayers, assistants, drivers, domestic workers, gardeners, operators, and the like). The obtained data was analyzed statistically using diverse techniques to know the weight of each factor and determine their validity (α between .56 and .92) and reliability (ρ (rho) between .75 and .92), which were considered satisfactory. This analysis method allowed us to develop a norm in percentiles to build a profile. The resulting instrument, the Conduct to Face Risk Test (CFR), can provide quantitative information regarding the weight of the six studied factors on safety workplace behavior. This instrument can be used as an intervention to redirect potentially unsafe work-related behavior in the face of risk. The purpose is to prevent the occurrence of work-related accidents and incidents. Similarly, the study allows us to appreciate that the selection of personnel for manual workers in construction, manufacturing, mining, or the service sector can be improved by using behavioral data on occupational safety, such as those that this instrument or similar ones in the future, can provide. Key words: occupational safety – safety behavior – at-risk behavior – self-control safety – self-esteem 1 This is extended summary of our work published originally in Spanish 2 Doctor en Psicología.
