The paper presents an approach to the semantic modelling and annotation of business processes and information resources, as it was designed within the FP7 ICT EU project SPIKE to support creation and maintenance of short-term business alliances and networked enterprises. A methodology for the development of the resource ontology, as a shareable knowledge model for semantic description of business processes, is proposed. Systematically collected user requirements, conceptual models implied by the selected implementation platform as well as available ontology resources and standards are employed in the ontology creation. The process of semantic annotation is described and illustrated using an example taken from a real application case. Keywords: Business process modelling, semantic technologies, ontology development, semantic annotation. 1 Introduction Effective collaboration of organizations cooperating in a flexible business network is one of the critical success factors and competitive advantages on the global market [7] and is especially important in today’s challenging economy situation. Standardized technologies as business modelling frameworks, service-oriented architecture, and Semantic Web services enable to design solutions supporting the interoperability between cooperating enterprises [8]. The business networking based on interoperable services and shareable information resources was identified also by the European Commission in 7th Framework Programme [5] as a progressive way of business collaboration and a promising answer to the challenges of global market pressures. Development of a platform that will enable fast setup and maintenance of project- oriented short-term alliances of collaborating business organizations is in the focus of the FP7 ICT project Secure Process-oriented Integrative Service Infrastructure for Networked Enterprises (SPIKE, www.spike-project.eu ).
