ARTS AND MEDICINE The Onomasticon database was designed to achieve two objectives: frstly, to reconstruct as complete a prosopography as our sources allow, detailing the masters and students at the University of Perugia since its foundation in 1308; secondly, to present the data on the institution’s history in a well-ordered and suffciently analytical manner 1 . The data gathered for the purposes of this sec- ond objective relate to: – the subjects taught in the Studium for each academic year – the discipline areas to which they refer – the total fnancial resources allocated to the various courses. Our aim is to briefy show how these data can be used to answer the question: «Do our databases provide material to gain more insight into the process of the emerging or disappearing of certain disciplines?». As an introduction, we shall provide some practical information on how to access the data on course contents in our database. We start with the search function «insegnamenti per disciplina e anno accademico», or «cours- es by discipline and academic year». First of all, we need to clarify the terms «discipline» and «course». We are using the term «discipline» where we might expect to fnd the term «faculty».
