Metaphor and metonymy interacon paerns in Modern Greek Paraskevi Thomou University of Crete (Greece) Abstract Drawing on Cognive Linguiscs theories of metaphor and metonymy, in this paper we deal with the interacon between metaphor and metonymy in non-idiomac Greek expressions. Data from (self-compiled and electronic) corpora show that metonymy funcons together with metaphor as a realizaon of metaphtonymy, and the interacon paerns revealed here are closer to the ‘metaphor from metonymy’ type of interacon (Goossens 1995). It is also argued that a specific construcon is instanated in addion to metaphor and metonymy. Key-words: interacon paern, metaphor, metonymy, Modern Greek, emerging construcon, corpus-based study 1. Introducon Metaphor realizaon in authenc language data reveals interesng facts about theory on metaphor. Metaphor is quite oſten realized in combinaon with metonymy. The purpose of this corpus-based study is to invesgate the interacon between metaphor and metonymy as it is realized in Modern Greek language data. The interacon of the two figures is found in the following example: (1) I efimeriδa mas filokseni epikera arthra. The newspaper ours hosts current arcles. “Our newspaper hosts current arcles” 1
