BEHAVIOR OF THERMAL ASH AGGREGATE
ON GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE BEAMS

ABSTRACT
To eliminate the natural stone as a part in geopolymer concrete, artificially made
thermal ash aggregate was introduced as coarse aggregate. About 130% of the
compressive strength was increased in full replacement of natural stone with thermal
ash aggregate. With the increase in workability and strength of geopolymer concrete
using artificial aggregate, it was decided to check its performance in geopolymer
concrete beams. By varying the thermal ash aggregate in geopolymer beams, its load
to deflection and moment rotation curvature at the time of external loading are
observed, discussed and compared.

1. INTRODUCTION
Destroy in nature happens to get the aggregate for concrete [1]. Demolition of natural rocks
can be avoided by introducing suitable alternative in concrete [2]. Thermal ash aggregate can
be used as an alternative for natural stone as coarse aggregate in concrete [3]. Strength in
concrete is determined by coarse aggregate [4]. Thermal ash aggregate gives good crushing
value, good packing, etc. similar to hard natural stone. The physical properties of thermal ash
aggregate perform better than the natural coarse aggregate [5].
Geo polymer concrete with thermal ash aggregate as coarse aggregate improves the
workability and strength. Full replacement of natural aggregate in geopolymer concrete can be
done with thermal ash aggregate [6]. The uniform size, less moisture content, good crushing
