ABSTRACT
The main goal of this study is to predict the external stability for segmental
retaining walls reinforced with geogrid by applying artificial neural networks (ANN)
and statistical method, Support Vector Machine (SVM) according to the kernel
function. The data used for this study were 110 sets of segmental retaining wall designs.
The targets used for prediction were the factor of safety for overturning, base sliding
and bearing capacity and the input parameters were the height of the wall, slope angle
and surcharge load. The results achieved from the RBF kernel model are found to be
better than other SVM kernel models. The regression square (R
2
) values for ANN
prediction were 0.933, 0.984 and 0.998 while the (R
2
) values for SVM prediction based
on Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel were 0.732, 0.839 and 0.932 for overturning,
base sliding and bearing capacity safety factor, respectively. The predicted result
showed that ANN obtains higher regression square value as compared with SVM based
on Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel model. Finally, both ANN model and SVM
based on RBF model successfully predicted the external stability for segmental
retaining walls.
Key words: Artificial Neural Network (ANN), support vector machine, retaining wall,
external stability and Prediction.
