An Insight on the Development of Filipino Adolescents Eimelle A. Near, BS Psychology 1-4 During the adolescent years of a person, many changes happen in their biological, emotional, behavioral and even cognitive selves. Development during these years are what determines a person's realization of themself which helps them pursue their self-recognized roles in the world. However, problems arise which hinder the growth. The Filipino youth experiences various problems during their adolescent years which are caused by different socio-cultural factors in their environment. This insight paper aims to discuss the problems faced by the Filipino youth and its causes, the role of developmental psychology in helping the youth face individual struggles, and whether these problems are expected in their developmental milestones. The issue of teenage pregnancy and sexual abuse in Filipino children and adolescents are always a pressing matter. Sexual abuse and humiliation as punishment by the family, along with physical and corporal punishment are done within families which bear a heavy effect on the child or adolescent (Aurelio, 2017). International organizations such as UNICEF investigated this, as the rate of child abuse and sexual exploitation on children have become rampant on an alarming rate. Even before adolescence, the children may have been already exposed to child sexual abuse which are often encouraged by their own family members. Further investigations indicate that the selling of online sexual activity and the like provides easy money to the young and family (Ramiro et.al., 2019). As the youth are introduced to sexual activity in an improper and unsafe way, they risk becoming pregnant at an early age, and becoming repeatedly pregnant on the average years of 15 to 19 (Monterona, 2020). These problems are not easily addressed as there is still a taboo and an unwavering conservative perspective among Filipino elderly who refuse to employ and discuss sex education and similar topics which can help make the young and old better understand the biological and psychological changes of the adolescent youth. On the educational and occupational aspect, the youth face a problem in discovering opportunities and practical roles in the society. In this stage of their lives, they face the challenge of the need to become self-reliant and responsible as they grow into adulthood. In light of this, the challenge of academic excellence and pursuit for opportunity in terms of career is sought by the individual. To align with the global standards of education, the Philippine government employed the K-12 Curriculum beginning in 2013. Adding two year-levels in high school labelled as Senior High School has changed the lives of people—students and their families—as they were introduced to the opportunity of working after graduating this level. However, this also adds the fact of spending two more years on their child's education. In years after, companies report hesitance in employing SHS graduates (Valencia, 2019). This hesitance roots from the industry
