Chapter 10
The Battle of Gaugamela II
Gaugamela was the last major battle between the forces of Alexander the Great and the Persian
Empire under Darius III. This chapter concludes my analysis of that battle, starting with the
collapse of the Persian left flank. In this chapter I seek to reconcile the conflicting accounts in
the sources as far as possible, to determine the most likely course of events. At the end of the
chapter is an appendix that summarises the course of the battle by rough stages.
