ACADEMIA Letters Application of Bioflms in Aquaculture Systems Oluwatosin Abidemi Ogunkalu, Nigde Omer Halisdemir University Abstract Bioflms are microbial group related with a matrix of extracellular polymeric material joined to several sub-merged surfaces, they are important for various biochemical chains in aquaculture ecosystems, specifcally, nitrogen cycling. The main active force is the intensive development of heterotrophic bacteria for reduction of excessive undesirable parts of aquaculture. The functions of bioflms in aquaculture lessens the production costs of shrimps through reduction of water exchange. Nitrogen uptake through bioflm could assist to minimize the incident of pathogenic bacteria in rearing structure, Elevated value of nitrogen compounds leads to occurrence of pathogenic organisms. Availability of nitrifying bacteria in the bioflm caused reduction in the rate of ammonia in the rearing system. Also, reduction in ammonia and parallel supplementation in nitrate and nitrite level shows that the existence of nitrifying bacteria in the bioflm perform a specifc function in the management of water quality .Likewise, absorption of ammonia is carried out through microalgae that utilized this component in production of diferent biomass. The reduction in the production of pathogenic bacteria could be due to activity of nitrogen fxation through the bioflm, as a result nitrogen compound level is elevated, it generally support the increased population of microorganisms. The establishment of bioflms are normally said to progress in the following order: self-surface colonization, individual micro-colonies formation, and bioflms formation micro-colonies, Bioflm application in aquaculture is of great benefts because of its low cost and availability.
