Deli Serdang 20355, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia e-mail:lindamargata@hotmail.com Abstract: The composition in beetroot is known to decrease cholesterol level by inhibiting the production of glutaryl acid. The purpose of this study was to compare the cholesterol decreasing effect of beetroot juice and extract in white rats. Twenty four rats were used in this study and were induced with 125 mg per day propylthiouracil (PTU) divided into two doses for ten days. Rats with total cholesterol level higher than 200 mg/dL were then used for the experiment. The hypercholesterolemic rats were divided into four groups and each groups was given with: 1% sodium CMC, 63 mg/kg body weight (BW) of simvastatin, 500 mg/kg BW of beetroot extract and 250 g/kg BW of beetroot juice for fifteen days. Total cholesterol levels were measured on day 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. Experiment data was processed with SPSS program using one-way ANOVA with significance value of 0.05. The results of this study show that total cholesterol levels of rats before treatment with beetroot juice and extract were 306 and 311 mg/dL, respectively. While total cholesterol levels after the treatment with beetroot juice and extract are 103 and 146 mg/dL. Treatment with beetroot juice and extract significantly decrease total cholesterol level in rats. In addition, beetroot juice is more effective than beetroot extract in lowering total cholesterol level. Keywords: Beta vulagaris L.; cholesterol; simvastatin 1. PENDAHULUAN Hiperkolesterolemia adalah suatu penyakit meningkatnya satu atau lebih kadar kolesterol ester, Keadaan hyperlipidemia menyebabkan jumlah LDL banyak beredar dalam darah sehingga terjadi pembentukan sel busa (Limpo, 2018). Tanaman tradisional berperan penting dalam dunia kesehatan dan telah digunakan secara empiris oleh masyarakat Indonesia. Pada saat ini, penggunaan obat tradisional telah meningkat. Pemerintah, dalam hal ini Departemen Kesehatan, juga mendukung pengobatan tradisional selain memberikan manfaat pada tubuh juga mempunyai efek samping yang relatif kecil (Mulyani, 2015).
