HIRAYA FORESIGHT: THE INDIGENOUS BASE OF FUTURES THINKING 1 Lizan Perante-Calina, DPA 2 A happy futures day to everyone! Today I am going to talk about the Hiraya Foresight, which I would say is a truly Philippine indigenous approach to futures thinking. In the past, we Asians tended to adopt and borrow western theories and concepts, and this has been so, and still is, in my own country, which has been colonized by Spain for 333 years, starting from 1565 to 1898. In that long colonial period, the colonial mentality cannot but emerge such that indigenous concepts were all relegated to the sidelines if not vanished to nowhere. This tendency has started to be reversed by well-meaning Filipino scholars and researchers. They have found the hidden wisdom of the indigenous words and phrases and that they often shed more and deeper meaning to the reality we are surrounded with than the foreign- derived words.
