Firstly, based on historic socioeconomic and vehicle sales records, we develop models to forecast overall vehicle demand with econometric methods and machine learning techniques. Secondly, using an online questionnaire survey, we develop models to predict the overall demand split in different vehicle types. Models include LOGIT models and multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks. We use recent incentives to drive EV demand in order to assess the effectiveness of similar efforts in the future. Lastly, we propose a method to interpret ANN model results and develop policy proposals by conducting a forecast sensitivity analysis. We compare the results of different techniques and we find that incorporating respondent perceptions can enhance the predictive ability of discrete choice models and drive policy proposals in terms that are easy to understand for decision-makers.
