256 Municipal self-government as a ma- nifestation of modern Bulgarian culture in the broadest sense of the term dates back to the period of Bulgarian National Revival (18 th – 19 th c.) This is a well- known and proven fact, which explains the increased interest in the history of the Bulgarian in this period from the first years after 1878 until today. “Digging” into this history, local historians, soci- ologists, cultural studies researchers have found sufficient number of valuable facts leading to the beginning of the Bulgarian educational work, the organization and development of church life, the guilds and role of city leaders, modern cultural en- deavors of the era such as the community centers, theaters, educational societies, etc. – i.e., manifestations closely related to the earliest history of the Bulgarian municipal self-government. Fate was benevolent to some of the municipalities from the period of Bulgar- ian National Revival and has preserved over time the documentary material, which could facilitate the research inter- est today. Conscientious historians with a professional attitude to the sources have even published municipal chronicles and valuable archival materials. Examples in this regard are cities such as Tarnovo, Pleven, Sofia, Gabrovo, Ruse, Haskovo, Silistra, Targovishte, Vidin, etc. Else- where, however, the municipal docu- ments are missing or are only partially preserved – such as Sliven, for example, whose city chronicles have been carefully preserved and handed over to the Na- tional Library in Sofia, but alas they were destroyed during the bombing of the capi- tal in the Second World War. That is why today, almost a century and a half after the end of that brilliant national affirm- ing epoch, any publication, documentary or monographic, on the topic of the Bul- garian National Revival municipalities cannot but be met with interest and the reader‘s question: what new facts can we learn from it. There is no doubt that the answers are always a priority for the readers, but here I will allow myself to share my opinion on the contributions of a recently published monograph on this topic – the book by Dr. Tihomir Tonkov, entitled: “The Municipality of Tarnovo 1763–1878” (Veliko Tarnovo, 2020). Dr. Tonkov‘s monograph presents the overall history of the Tarnovo mu- nicipality during the period of Bulgarian National Revival. It is structured in a pref- Bulgarian Historical Review, 2021, 1–2 Contribution to the Study of the Bulgarian Municipality during the National Revival Period Тихомир Тонков.
