Acerca de un rey hablador y de un hablador a secas: Ecos de Los rı´os profundos de Jose ´ Marı ´a Arguedas en El hablador de Mario Vargas Llosa Kristine Vanden Berghe Published online: 27 March 2008 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008 Abstract Because of a number of common concerns and expressions, it is possible to read The Storyteller (1987) as a novel where Mario Vargas Llosa prepares the ideas for his essay Archaic Utopia: Jose´ Maria Arguedas and the Fictions of Indigenism (1996) In its turn, this connection suggests a second intertexual rela- tionship, between Deep Rivers (1958) and The Storyteller. This article uses the interpretative clues in the essay to uncover the resemblances between the two novels. The characters, Ernesto and Antero, alias Markask’a in Deep Rivers and Achaic Utopia and, on the other hand, the first person narrator and Sau ´ l Zuratas alias Mascarita in The Storyteller, serve as a starting point for the analysis. Next, an study of the titles reveals a remarkable intertitular game. While this may not confirm the hypothesis of a deliberate intertextual relationship, it at least attests to its plausibility. A la par de estos nuevos estudios sobre Arguedas, han aparecido recientemente otros acerca del discurso de Mario Vargas Llosa sobre Arguedas que analizan e ´ste con distintas miras, a fin de examinar la relacio ´n entre ambos escritores (Aube `s y Gladieu 2004), o para entender mejor la evolucio ´n del propio Vargas Llosa (Giudicelli 2004; Joset 2003).
