Professionalism encompasses professional learning which causes changes in professional knowledge, beliefs, behaviour and actions. It is a process by which, alone and with others, teachers review, renew and increase their knowledge base, skills and intelligence. It entails a wide range of activities and practices aiming at developing professional thinking and practice of teachers. A professional is an expert who displays a high standard of conduct in his or her practices. Thus, professionalism is related to practitioners’ knowledge, skills, beliefs and conduct. This article addresses the issues of the professionalism in English teacher development through questions such as what does professionalism entail? In what ways are English teachers professionals? How can professionalisms be developed among English teachers? This article also examines the substances and characteristics of English language teaching professionalism. Introduction Can we perform a certain work with some degree of expertise? Then, broadly speaking, we are professionals. Professionals possess specific skills, knowledge, beliefs and conventions that other people do not have. They need to be experts in some skill or field of knowledge. They also need to exhibit certain performance which other lay people cannot perform. They communicate between themselves employing registers that are not readily comprehensible to a layperson. They write in order to communicate with other members in their group.
