RESUMO Durante suas viagens pela Amazônia (1783 a 1792) o naturalista Alexandre Rodrigues Fer- reira recolheu e fez desenhos e pinturas sobre muitas máscaras de povos indígenas da região entre o Alto Solimões e o rio Negro. Por mui- to tempo esse material esteve guardado em arquivos portugueses, só vindo a ser indexa- do e exposto no fnal do século XX. O artigo relata a experiência de reencontro entre, de um lado, as imagens e descrições constantes nas fchas deste material e, de outro, as inter - pretações e narrativas feitas na atualidade por intelectuais, líderes e estudantes do povo Ti- cuna. No diálogo, promovido pelo etnógrafo, as noções convencionais de tribo, grupo étni- co e cultura revelam-se como extremamente limitadas, apontando a necessidade de novas concepções relativas ao tempo e as comuni- cações transculturais. The Epiphany Of Masks: A Dialogical Experience About Transcultural Com- munications ABSTRACT During his travels through Amazonia (1783- 1792) the naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues Fer- reira collected and made drawings and paint- ings of many masks of indigenous peoples of the region between the upper Amazon and the Rio Negro. For a long time this material was stored in Portuguese archives. It has been in- dexed and exposed only in the late twentieth century.The article reports the experience to bring together, on the one hand, the images and descriptions contained in the records of this material and, on the other, interpreta- tions and narratives made today by intellec- tuals, leaders and students of Ticuna people. In the dialogue, articulated by the ethnogra- pher, conventional notions of tribe, ethnicity and culture are revealed as extremely limited, highlighting the need for new concepts related to time and transcultural communications.
