Do. Dr., Geliim niversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Fakültesi Psikoloji Blümü, stanbul SUMMARY ’Ergo’ word which means ’work’ has an origin of Greek language. It is a method which practises in individuals who have pyhsical or mental disabilities. Ergotherapy, on the other meaning occupational therapy, includes activi- ties like art, music, painting, handiwork, physical activi- ties, motor functioning therapy, auditory perception exercises, ligering on exercises. Although it seems as a new healthcare field, the history of ergotherapy is quite old. It has been used in the century of 4th anno domini in Asklepios Temple as a rehabilitation method for dis- abled people. Nowadays, there are ever increasing arti- cles about the efficieny of ergotherapy. It already took 17th place inside the list of best healthcare jobs and 23th place inside the best entire jobs in United States of America. At the present time, although there are many ergotherapists all over the World, unfortunately in our country there is few. In this sense, ergotherapy seems to be an important job field in the near future in Turkey. Key Words: Ergotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabili- tation ZET ’Ergo’ kelimesi Yunanca kkenli olup ’i’ anlamna gelmek- tedir. Ruhsal veya fiziksel engeli bulunan bireyleri duru- ma ynelik aktivitelerle yeniden topluma kazandrmak amacyla uygulanan bir yntemdir. Ergoterapi, bir dier ad ile ura terapisi, bünyesinde sanat, müzik, resim, el ii, fiziksel aktiviteler, motor-fonksiyon terapisi, duyumsal alg salama egzersizleri, yaam idame ettirebilme egz- ersizleri gibi bir ok etkinlii barndrmaktadr. Bir ok insan ergoterapiyi yeni bir salk alan olarak düünebilir fakat tarihi olduka eskidir. Milattan sonra 4. Yüzylda Bergamada Asklepios tapnanda ifal su, amur bany- olar, spor ve tiyatro etkinliklerinin engelli kiilerin reha- bilitasyonunda kullanld bilinmektedir. Ergoterapinin günümüzde etkinliine dair giderek artan sayda bilimsel makale yaynlanmaya devam etmektedir. Amerika Birleik Devletleri’ nde ergoterapi en iyi salk meslekleri arasnda 17. srada yer alrken, tüm meslekler iinde en iyi meslek- ler sralamasnda 23. srada yer almaktadr. Günümüzde dünyada bir ok alanda alan ergoterapistler bulun- makta iken ne yazk ki ülkemizde bu say ok kstldr. Bu anlamda ergoterapi, yakn gelecekte Türkiye’ de nemli bir i alan olacak gibi grünmektedir.
