International Conference on Sustainable Development for Water and Waste Water Treatment Yogyakarta, INDONESIA, December 14-15, 2009. 1 A Study of Spatial Analysis to Identify the Potential of Marine Energy in Malaysia Khairul Nizam Abdul Maulud & Nafisah Mat Yusoff Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, National University of Malaysia, Malaysia Email: knam@eng.ukm.my Abstract As a result of rapid growth of the nation, a large amount of energy is required to fulfill the demand. Not only a renewable energy is required, but also a source of energy that is safe and clean so that it would not harm the future generations. Energy crisis has lead to exploitation on alternative energy such as marine renewable energy. Renewable energy like marine energy that is generated from the waves or current is the more effective alternative compared to other energy. Water from sea has a good potential to produce a renewable energy. In this study, the main objective is to identify the best place to generate marine energy in Malaysia. Using GIS, we can estimate the amount of power for the certain place. The data about climate information and forecast of sea condition may be derived from the Malaysia Meteorological Service used to study the wave height and wave period, wind speed and sea surface temperature around Malaysia. Finally from the results of analysis got the index as a reference to summarize a grade and potential levels of locations selected. 1. INTRODUCTION Imagine life without energy. If one day, blackout accident occur at least for 2 hours, imagine how life become miserable because lots of activities will be stuck. From small activities like completing assignments that need to be submitted urgently to large activities such as production in the factory become delay and cause loss in million of dollar and maybe road accident can happen due to disturbance in traffic light circuit. So most of activities nowadays in this 21 st century are depending to energy and this show how energy play an important role in life. Current energy source that being used come from fossil fuel. However how long this source can last because it had been used since long times ago and one day this source will finished. In addition, this fossil fuel extraction also lead to emission of greenhouse gas [4]. Besides that, ocean coal mining operation for energy source in Scotland, Taiwan and Japan also being courted due to pollution [4]. That’s why, renewable energy or alternative energy need to be study and develop urgently to backup current energy source so that future generations will still experience life using fossil fuel energy. This renewable energy is not only required to fulfill the demand but also must be safe and clean so that it would not harm the future generations. Most of energy come from the ocean. Besides hydrocarbons, there are also tides, waves, marine winds and others that can be generate as renewable
